HB 225 — Speed Cameras in School Zones: Elimination of School Zone Speed Cameras
This bill seeks to eliminate automated speed cameras in school zones by prohibiting local governments from entering or renewing contracts for automated traffic enforcement. The ban will officially take effect on July 1, 2026. Additionally, the bill revises regulations for radar speed detection by requiring law enforcement agencies, except those using automated devices, to conduct accuracy tests at the beginning and end of each shift.
The bill also mandates that stationary speed detection devices, including speed cameras in school zones, remain visible to motorists from at least 500 feet. Furthermore, it includes fines from school zone speed cameras when determining whether a law enforcement agency’s revenue from speeding violations meets or exceeds 35% of its budget.
